When you think about a traditional cowboy what comes to mind? Is it the horses, the cattle, the open range, singing around the campfire or the howl of the coyotes at night? It’s probably all that and more
A cowboy first and foremost is a cattle herder working on ranches in North America. They rode on horseback and used lassos to herd in the cattle most of which were left to graze on open range. The life of a rancher was hard physical work, handling cattle or horses for most of their lives, but it was good honest work.
However, movies have romanticized and popularized the lifestyle of a cowboy, often depicting them as violent gunslingers running from the law or fighting Native American Indians. The reality is that traditional cowboys that worked on a ranch had no time for anything more than their constant and relentless hard work. Gunslingers and outlaws that we all too often call cowboys are not really true cowboys, but even so they are part of a fascinating heritage that shaped the American frontier.
When thinking about my favorite cowboy movies they have to be the ones that feature the ultimate cowboy, Clint Eastwood. He starred in some of the best ever western cowboy movies of all time.
A Fist Full of Dollars (1964). The first from Sergio Leone’s trilogy of Spaghetti Westerns introduces us to Clint as the man with no name involving himself in a family feud in order to make a fist full of dollars.
For A Few Dollars More (1965) sees the man with no name return as a bounty hunter pursuing a wanted fugitive.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is the third of the trilogy which sees Clint as “The Good” returning as a bounty hunter trying to find buried gold in the middle of the two warring armies of the American Civil War.
High Plains Drifter (1973). Clint plays a gun slinging stranger who arrives in the small town of Lago. He’s hired to bring towns people together in order to hold off three outlaws who are on their way.
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) sees Clint as a peaceful farmer who, after his farm is burned down and his family killed, joins a band of rebel fighters and seeks revenge.
Unforgiven (1992). This oscar winning movie was directed by and also starred Clint Eastwood as a retired old Wild West gunslinger who reluctantly takes one last job.
